North Central Florida Advanced Practice Nurses

SRAHEC’s Occupational Spanish Training Opportunity

Posted over 5 years ago by Mary S. Johnson

Good Afternoon,

I'm writing to see if members of your group would be interested in a professional development training our organization now offers. Suwannee River Area Health Education Center is a rural health non-profit that offers community programs to improve the health of our counties, as well as meeting and association services for allied health professionals. We have a new program that offers in-person training on occupational Spanish for nurses.

This training is a great professional development opportunity for health professionals to better help their Spanish-speaking patients. There are 11 different training types covering a variety of healthcare professional fields (i.e. nursing, physicians, physical therapists, etc.). No previous Spanish-language knowledge or experience is required.

Each training covers a core set of Spanish language basics and then is tailored to cover scenarios that the students will encounter in the future. This includes instructions for completing an intake form, explaining basic medical procedures, and more. It’s important to note, participants will not be fluent in Spanish upon completion of the program. This training is to give them the tools to better communicate with patients who may be more comfortable speaking in Spanish. Along with the in-person training, participants will receive a manual with all of the program content, as well as audio files to continue practicing at home.

The base price for the program is $175 per person. This includes the live training, manual and audio files. These materials are copyrighted and are only for those participating in the training. CE credits and certificates are also available at no additional price. The training is a minimum of eight hours, which can be a daylong program or several sessions, whatever is best for you. Larger groups of 10 or more will require 12-16 hours of total training time to allow for sufficient interactivity and group participation. These trainings can be done at your site, at our Suwannee River AHEC office or a convenient community location. We will work with you on how to best deliver the trainings based on anticipated participation.

Ronnie Lovler, Occupational Spanish Specialist, will lead the trainings. She has a lengthy background in working with Spanish speakers and is well versed in Spanish language and culture overall, as well as regional differences from country to country.
